Google's beefing up Android app security, but not everyone's going to be happy

Google is rolling out new app security measures with Play Integrity, but they might limit user flexibility. How will these changes affect your Android experience?

Android is becoming more like iOS. Goodbye to modded apps and downloading apps not available in your region.

Step 1: Disable Play Integrity. Step 2: Stop crying wolf. Done.

@Porter
Banking apps will stop functioning. That’s the biggest drawback.

Developers control this now, not users. You can’t disable it anymore.

Unlocking your bootloader disables attestation anyway, so Play Integrity won’t apply if your bootloader is unlocked.

How will this affect ReVanced and microG?

Hard to say. They’ve talked about stopping ad-blocking before, but nothing’s really changed for me.

Seems like Google is actively targeting ReVanced. If that happens, I’ll just use Firefox with extensions. I pay for YouTube Premium, but I still want features like returning dislikes and SponsorBlock.

Don’t iOS my Android!

If it’s just checking for sideloaded apps running with specific permissions, like screen recording, maybe that’s okay. But the article isn’t clear.

Play Integrity is turned off on my device.

How do people manage without Play Integrity? RCS and certain apps not working is a dealbreaker for me.

How do you stop the annoying RCS pop-ups in the Messages app?

@Merrick
You can turn it off in the Messages app settings. It’s been an option for years.

Restricting users from doing what they want with their devices makes Android feel more closed. When I unlock my bootloader, it’s my responsibility. Google shouldn’t interfere.

When you unlock your bootloader, you lose the right to use Google’s services in unsupported ways. If you want a ‘Linux revolution,’ use LineageOS, but accept that some apps won’t work. Ironically, Google devices have the best support for custom ROMs.

This feels like part of Google’s push to protect revenue streams. But banking apps needing more security might justify it. If this continues, people might start using burner phones or containers for financial apps.

How many versions of Play Protect do we need? They both do the same thing but now require extra resources unless you disable them.

I’m worried about this impacting modded apps. Some apps are unbearable without modifications.
