Android’s new app archiving feature offers a way to save storage space without losing app data. Have you tried it yet?
When people think about reclaiming space, they’re not thinking about deleting apps they chose to install. Nobody wants their stuff auto-deleted. What people really want is to remove pre-installed bloatware completely, not just disable it.
@Perry
Removing pre-installed apps won’t free up space because they live in a separate system partition. Disabling them at least clears app data, which helps a bit. Plus, storage sizes have grown, so space usage isn’t as critical now.
@Perry
Disabling system apps doesn’t affect user storage. If you don’t update those apps and leave them disabled, they won’t take up any additional /data space.
@Perry
That’s not the point of this feature. When you archive an app, it’s not deleted. Its data stays intact, but the app itself is removed. For example, I archived my smart IR remote app since I won’t need it until next summer. When I reinstall, I won’t have to sign back in.
@Shannon
Why not just add a ‘Save Everything’ button in the system settings? That would be simpler for everyone.
I wish they’d swap the archive and open buttons. My muscle memory keeps making me archive apps when I’m trying to open them. Then I have to wait for the app to redownload.

Same here! I’ve made that mistake so many times.
