Samsung Demos Mixed Reality Headset with Android XR – What’s Next?

Samsung has revealed its mixed reality headset in a live demo. Running on Android XR, it seems to have exceeded expectations. Could this be a game-changer in the VR/AR space?

Man, I still have my Samsung Gear VR. Those were fun times.

It’s great to see progress on Android XR outside of the Quest ecosystem. Definitely interested in picking one up.

That said, I’ve never liked the hand overlay feature in these systems (same with the Quest). It feels more immersive to see my hands naturally or as part of a small window, like the Vision Pro.

@Eren
Wouldn’t a slightly transparent hand overlay be better? The current design feels intrusive.

@Eren
I find the transparent blue overlay even weirder. It’s out of place in a mixed reality environment, even if it improves visibility. You’d have to hold your hands awkwardly for it to work anyway.

@Eren
Google Maps in immersive mode on a headset looks amazing!

This live demo was way more impressive than what they showed in the initial announcement.

I can’t believe Samsung looked at the Apple Vision Pro and thought, “Let’s also lose that much money on VR.”

Samsung can afford to take losses in VR if their mobile handset division keeps making up for it. It’s all part of R&D and innovation.

If they price it competitively, they might create a real competitor to the Meta Quest.

Unless it’s priced at $3,000 or more, it doesn’t belong in the same sentence as Vision Pro. But watch everyone compare them endlessly during launch.

If AI tools like Gemini and Astro become deeply integrated, mixed reality could evolve into a must-have tech. It’s all about perfecting the prototype stage for future smart glasses with better quality and battery life.

The problem with Vision Pro wasn’t the design – it was the price.

You’ve got to be in the game to win it.

This demo looked way more polished than the ones from Immersed.

I don’t get why they went with VR passthrough again. People don’t want a heavy screen on their face – it gets exhausting. Just create a transparent display that overlays graphics directly!

I’ve seen too many of these projects fail. Not getting my hopes up.
