This is a review of the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper. Let’s discuss if the matte display is really a game-changer or just a gimmick.

The update policy isn’t great but also not too bad for this price. Most people I know using TCL phones don’t really care about updates, so maybe this is fine for the target audience.

I used it for a couple of weeks. The matte screen sounded cool, but I just couldn’t adjust to the screen ratio, and the lack of accessories was frustrating. Returning it.

Honestly, feels like a 180-euro phone being sold for double the price because of the matte screen gimmick.
I’ve been using this phone for about a month. It’s decent, but the support is awful. No one in Australia seems to know where I can get accessories or updates for it.

I emailed TCL in my region and got a quick response. They said no magnetic cases exist but ended up sending me an original case for free.
@Derry
No one here knows anything about accessories. Feels like they don’t exist.

AliExpress seems to be the only place to get anything for this phone at a fair price. Otherwise, good luck finding accessories.
I didn’t realize TCL released a phone in September. A few years ago, they were pushing hard in carrier stores. What happened?

They still show up as budget options on carriers in the US. They also make T-Mobile REVVL phones. But Moto and Samsung have been pretty aggressive in that space.
@Harley
The current REVVL/T-Phone models are actually made by Wingtech.
@Harley
Got it. That clears things up.
I love the matte screen. I also have a Lenovo Pad Pro with a matte screen, and I can’t go back to glossy. The selfie camera on this phone is surprisingly good, and the 512GB storage is a huge bonus for a budget device.
@Jai
Many budget Chinese phones, like the Moto G15, already have 512GB storage.
I’m curious about how the matte screen compares to glossy ones. Seems promising, especially if it had OLED instead of IPS. The black-and-white hardware button is an interesting addition, though.

I have an LG monitor with a matte coating. It reduces reflections but keeps colors vibrant, unlike older matte screens that washed everything out.

Would love something like this on an 8-inch tablet. For 10-inch tablets, I usually rely on cases and screen protectors.

The matte display here feels washed out, though.
I can’t get over how massive the camera module is. It looks ridiculous!
